When patching is no longer enough. We rewire older homes — knob-and-tube replacement, aluminum wiring removal, undersized service updates — bringing your house up to current code, safely.
Central Kentucky has beautiful old homes. The Historic District in Frankfort, downtown Lawrenceburg, the older neighborhoods of Versailles. But homes built before the 1960s often have wiring that has not aged well — knob-and-tube, ungrounded two-wire systems, deteriorating insulation, undersized service. At some point, patching individual circuits stops being the answer.
Whole house rewiring is a serious project — but for the right home, it is the only thing that solves the underlying issue. ABC Electric has rewired dozens of older central Kentucky homes since 1999. Our approach is methodical: assess the existing wiring, plan the rewire to minimize wall and ceiling damage, run the new circuits, replace the panel and service if needed, terminate at all the existing devices, and coordinate any drywall and trim repair you want.
Rewiring is also common when buying an older home and the inspection flags the wiring as a problem, when insurance refuses to underwrite an old wiring system, or when you are doing a major remodel and the walls are open anyway (which is the cheapest time to rewire). We will tell you honestly whether your home actually needs a full rewire or whether targeted updates will do the job — we do not push whole-house rewires on homes that do not need them.
Here is what is typically included when we handle this service for you.
Full removal and replacement of pre-1950s knob-and-tube wiring. Insurance-friendly result.
Aluminum branch circuit replacement or pigtailing — addressing the fire risk.
Adding ground to ungrounded systems. Modernizing outlets to current safety standards.
Often paired with whole-house rewires. New 200A service, new panel, new feeders.
We use fishing techniques to run new wire through walls without ripping them open.
Permits pulled, code-compliant work, full inspection coordination.

Usually not, but you will be without power in different parts of the house at different times. Many homeowners stay in place; some prefer to be out for the duration. We work around your schedule.
We minimize this aggressively. We use existing access points, attic and basement runs, and fishing techniques to pull new wire without opening walls. Some patching is usually unavoidable for outlet boxes and a few key runs — typically less than people expect.
Yes — that is one of the most common reasons people call us. After rewiring, we provide documentation showing the work was done by licensed electricians, permitted, and inspected. This typically clears insurance underwriting requirements.
